What DA and DR actually measure

Domain Authority (DA) is a 1–100 score from Moz that predicts how likely a website is to rank, based mostly on its links. Domain Rating (DR) is a 0–100 score from Ahrefs that shows how strong a website’s backlink profile is. Both are logarithmic: going from 20 to 30 is much easier than going from 70 to 80. Neither is used by Google.

Moz explains DA in its Domain Authority guide, and Ahrefs explains DR in its help centre. This checker shows both side by side, together with the numbers that tell you whether a site is real: organic traffic, ranking keywords, spam score and domain age.

What is a good DA or DR?

Scores only mean something when you compare sites in the same niche. Use this table as a rough guide:

ScoreWhat it usually means
0–20New or small site with few links
21–40Growing site with a real link profile
41–60Solid, established site
61–80Strong site, often a well-known publication
81–100Major platforms and household brands

How to judge a site before you buy a backlink

A high score alone is not enough. Before you pay for a guest post or a link, check five things:

  1. Authority. DA and DR in a sensible range for your niche. Big gaps between the two can mean the links were built cheaply.
  2. Real organic traffic. A site that Google sends visitors to is a site Google trusts. Thousands of links and zero traffic is a red flag.
  3. Spam score. Moz’s Spam Score is the share of similar sites that were penalised or banned. Treat 30% and above as risky.
  4. Relevance. A link from a smaller site in your topic often helps more than a link from a big site about everything.
  5. The site itself. Open it. If every post is a “sponsored” article with links to unrelated, high-risk offers, walk away.

The checker turns the first three checks into a quick verdict — Strong, Decent, Weak, Check carefully or Risky — so you can shortlist a list of sites in seconds. Relevance and the site itself still need your eyes.

Why DA and DR can disagree

Moz and Ahrefs crawl the web with different bots, keep different link indexes and use different formulas. Ahrefs’ DR is driven by how many strong sites link to a domain. Moz’s DA is a machine-learning prediction that also tries to discount manipulated links. When DR is high but DA, traffic and keywords are low, the site may have been pumped with cheap links. When all of them are high together, the site is almost always genuinely strong.

What to do with the results

Shortlist the sites marked Strong or Decent, then check what a fair price is with the backlink cost calculator. Before you add new links, make sure your anchor text stays natural with the anchor text ratio checker. If you would rather pick from sites that are already vetted, browse my guest post sites list.

DA and DR checker FAQ.

Is this DA and DR checker free?

Yes. You can check up to 10 websites at a time for free, with no sign-up.

What is a good Domain Authority?

There is no fixed “good” number. Compare a site with others in the same niche. As a rough guide, 20–40 is a growing site, 40–60 is solid and 60+ is strong. For link building, real organic traffic and relevance matter more than the score.

What is the difference between DA and DR?

DA is Moz’s score and DR is Ahrefs’ score. Both are built from backlink data, but each company uses its own link index and formula, so the same site can show different numbers.

Does Google use DA or DR?

No. Both are third-party metrics. Google uses its own signals. DA and DR are useful for comparing sites quickly, not as ranking factors.

What does the spam score mean?

Moz’s Spam Score is the percentage of sites with similar features that Moz found to be penalised or banned by Google. A high score does not prove a site is spam, but it is a reason to look closer before getting a link from it.

Why does a site have high DA but no traffic?

That usually means the site has links but does not rank for anything. It is a common pattern on link farms and expired-domain networks. The checker flags it as “Check carefully”.
