What is a broken link?

A broken link (or dead link) is a link that no longer works — the page it points to returns an error such as 404 Not Found, 410 Gone or 500 Server Error, or the website does not answer at all. Visitors hit a dead end, and search engines waste crawl time on pages that do not exist.

What the status codes mean

CodeMeaningWhat to do
200OK — the link worksNothing.
301 / 308Moved permanentlyUpdate the link to the final URL to save a redirect hop.
302 / 307Moved temporarilyCheck it is meant to be temporary.
403ForbiddenOften a bot block — open the link in a browser to confirm.
404 / 410Not found / goneReplace the link, remove it, or redirect the old page.
5xxServer errorTry again later; if it stays, replace the link.
No responseTimeout or the domain is goneReplace or remove the link.

Do broken links hurt SEO?

A few broken outbound links will not sink a page, but they are a quality signal. They frustrate visitors, waste crawl budget on internal 404s, and leak link value: when one of your own pages is gone, every link pointing to it — including backlinks from other sites — passes nothing. Google’s own documentation on HTTP errors explains how it handles each code.

How to fix broken links

  1. Internal 404s: update the link to the right page, or add a 301 redirect from the old URL.
  2. External 404s: find the new location of the page, link to a better source, or remove the link.
  3. Redirect chains: point the link straight to the final URL shown in the results.
  4. Mixed content: change http:// links to https:// on secure pages.
  5. Re-check: run the page again after one hour (results are cached for speed).

Turn broken links into backlinks

Broken links on other websites are an opportunity: if a site links to a dead page on your topic, you can suggest your page as the replacement. This is called broken link building, and it is one of the few outreach methods editors actually welcome.

Broken link checker FAQ.

Is this broken link checker free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up. Each check tests up to 150 links on one page, and you can check your other pages with one click.

Why does a link show 403 but works in my browser?

Some websites block automated checkers. A 403 usually means “bot blocked”, not broken. Open the link yourself to confirm before you change it.

Does it check images too?

Yes. Images on the page are tested along with normal links. Use the Images filter to see only them.

Can it check my whole website?

It checks one page at a time, which keeps it fast. Every internal link has a “Check page” button, so you can move through your site page by page.

Why do I see the same result when I check again?

Results are kept for one hour so repeat checks are instant. Wait an hour after fixing links, then check again.
