What keyword search volume means

Search volume is the average number of times a keyword is searched on Google each month, usually over the last 12 months. It tells you how much demand there is for a topic — not how much traffic you will get. A page in position one typically gets only a share of those searches.

The numbers in this tool are based on Google Keyword Planner data. Google rounds small numbers and groups close variants together, so treat volume as a way to compare keywords, not an exact count.

How to read the results

Monthly searchesWhat to do
0–10Cover it inside a bigger page, for example as an FAQ.
10–200Long-tail demand. Often easy to rank for with one focused page.
200–2,000Healthy demand. Worth an in-depth page — check who ranks first.
2,000+High demand and usually strong competition. Build supporting pages and links.

CPC (cost per click) shows what advertisers pay for the keyword. A high CPC is a strong hint that searchers are ready to buy. Competition is how many advertisers bid on it — it is about ads, not about how hard it is to rank organically.

How to choose keywords that actually bring customers

  1. Start with intent, not volume. “Buy podcast backlinks” has fewer searches than “podcast”, but almost every searcher is a potential customer.
  2. Check the country. A keyword can be popular in India and tiny in the US. Pick the market you sell to.
  3. Look at who ranks. If the first page is full of huge brands, target a more specific variation first. The bulk DA and DR checker shows how strong the ranking sites are.
  4. Group close variants. One great page can rank for dozens of similar keywords. Don’t write a separate page for each.
  5. Make the page complete. Answer the question, then the next questions people have. The free SEO audit checks the on-page basics once it is live.

Keywords for new websites

New sites rarely rank for big keywords straight away. Start with long-tail keywords you can win, build a few quality links, then move up to bigger terms. My guide to the best backlinks for new websites shows a simple three-month plan.

Keyword volume FAQ.

Is this keyword search volume checker free?

Yes. It is free and needs no sign-up. You can check one keyword at a time, in one country or across the top countries at once.

Where does the search volume come from?

The numbers are based on Google Keyword Planner data. They are monthly averages over the last 12 months.

Why do keyword tools show different volumes?

Each tool uses its own data and rounding. Google itself groups similar keywords and rounds small numbers. Use volume to compare keywords with each other, not as an exact count.

What does CPC tell me?

CPC is what advertisers pay per click on Google Ads. A high CPC means the keyword is commercially valuable — people searching it are often ready to buy.

Is a keyword with 10 searches worth targeting?

Sometimes. Very specific long-tail keywords often bring more visitors than their volume suggests, because one page can rank for many similar searches. Cover them inside a bigger page if they are too small for their own.
