What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is a score from 0 to 100 created by Ahrefs. It shows how strong a website’s backlink profile is compared with every other site in Ahrefs’ index. The more unique, strong websites link to a domain, the higher its DR.

According to Ahrefs, DR counts only followed links, counts each linking website once, and gives more weight to linking sites that are strong and link out to fewer other sites. Like DA, the scale is logarithmic.

How to read your DR score

DRLabelWhat it usually means
0–20LowNew site or very few followed links
21–40GrowingA real and growing link profile
41–60SolidEstablished site
61–80StrongWell-known publication or brand
81–100ExcellentMajor platforms

How to spot an inflated DR

Because DR depends only on links, it is easier to push up artificially than metrics based on traffic. Watch for these signs before you buy a link:

  • High DR, almost no organic traffic. Google does not trust the site enough to send visitors.
  • DR much higher than DA. Moz’s DA tries to discount manipulated links, so a big gap is a warning.
  • A high spam score. Moz has found that sites like it are often penalised.
  • A very young domain with a high DR. Check the domain age.

This checker shows all of these numbers next to DR, so you can judge a site in one look.

How to increase Domain Rating

  1. Get followed links from more unique websites. DR rewards new linking domains, not repeat links from the same site.
  2. Aim for strong, focused sites. A link from a strong site that links out sparingly passes more value.
  3. Use trusted platforms. Listings on high-DR platforms — such as podcast platforms with DR 80–97 — are a safe way to add strong domains.
  4. Keep anchors natural. Check your mix with the anchor text ratio checker.

DR checker FAQ.

Is this DR checker free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and shows Ahrefs Domain Rating together with DA, spam score, traffic and domain age.

What is a good Domain Rating?

Compare it with the sites ranking for your keywords. As a rough guide, 20–40 is a growing site, 40–60 is solid and 60+ is strong.

How is DR calculated?

Ahrefs looks at the unique websites that link to a domain with followed links, how strong each of those websites is, and how many other sites they link to. Each linking website counts only once.

Why is my DR 0?

Usually because no other websites link to the site with followed links yet, or Ahrefs has not found them. New sites often start at 0.

What is the difference between DR and DA?

DR is Ahrefs’ score of backlink strength. DA is Moz’s prediction of ranking ability. They use different link indexes and formulas, so the numbers differ.

Does Google use DR?

No. DR is an Ahrefs metric. It helps you compare sites quickly, but it is not a Google ranking factor.
