How to check if a podcast name is taken
Search the exact name on Apple Podcasts (the checker above does this instantly), then on Spotify and YouTube. Google the name in quotes, check whether the .com domain and social handles are free, and search your country’s trademark database. If a well-known show already uses the name, pick another — even if the directories would let you publish it.
- Apple Podcasts — the largest catalogue and the one many other apps copy. The checker searches it live and flags exact and similar names.
- Spotify and YouTube — use the quick links in the results to search both.
- Google — search
"your podcast name" podcastwith quotes to find shows, books, brands or events with the same name. - Domain and social handles — a matching .com and the same handle on Instagram and X make your show easier to find and promote.
- Trademarks — search the official database where you live (for example the USPTO in the United States). A registered trademark is the one conflict that can force a rename.
What makes a good podcast name?
- It passes the radio test. Someone should be able to hear it once and spell it into a search bar.
- It hints at the topic. “Startup Stories” tells listeners more than “Echo Chamber”.
- It is short. One to four words is easier to remember and fits cover art and app screens.
- It is unique. No exact match on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and no well-known brand with the same name.
- It is not keyword-stuffed. Apple Podcasts has rejected shows with titles stuffed with keywords since 2019. Put extra keywords in your description and episode titles instead.
Podcast name formulas (with examples)
| Formula | Example | Works for |
|---|---|---|
| The [Topic] Show | The Garden Show | Clear, broad shows |
| [Topic] + verb or twist | Marketing Unpacked, Fitness Decoded | Expert and educational shows |
| [Host] on [Topic] | Sara on Startups | Personal brands |
| Inside / Beyond [Topic] | Inside Real Estate | Industry and insider shows |
| Alliteration | Money Moves Monday | Memorable, casual shows |
| Audience + promise | The New Founder | Shows for a specific listener |
The generator above combines these formulas with your topic and host name — then checks any idea against Apple Podcasts in one click.
Can two podcasts have the same name?
Technically, yes — most directories don’t block duplicate titles. But it causes problems: listeners find the wrong show, reviews and recommendations get mixed up, and if the other show has a registered trademark you may be forced to rename. A unique name is also much easier to rank for in podcast apps and Google.
Podcast naming mistakes to avoid
- Inside jokes or made-up words nobody can spell after hearing them once.
- Names that only work for your first season’s topic.
- Copying a popular show’s name with one word changed.
- Long titles packed with keywords, which Apple may reject.
- Skipping the domain and social handle check until after launch.

Podcast name FAQ.
How do I know if a podcast name is taken?
Search the exact name on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, Google it in quotes, and check the domain, social handles and trademark database. The checker above searches Apple Podcasts instantly and links to the other checks.
Is this podcast name checker free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and checks names against Apple’s public podcast search.
Does a name being free on Apple Podcasts mean I can use it?
Not always. Also check Spotify, YouTube, Google and your country’s trademark database. Apple is the biggest catalogue, but not the only place a name can be used.
Should my podcast name include keywords?
One clear topic word helps, but don’t stuff keywords into the title — Apple Podcasts can reject keyword-stuffed titles. Use your description and episode titles for keywords.
Can I change my podcast name later?
Yes, you can update the title in your podcast host and the change flows to most apps through your RSS feed. But you lose some recognition, so it is worth choosing carefully at the start.
Does the name generator use AI?
No. It combines proven naming formulas with your topic and host name, so it works instantly and runs in your browser.
