How to pitch a guest post (that editors actually answer)

A good guest post pitch is short, personal and specific: address the editor by name, show you know their site, offer two or three topic ideas that fit their readers, add one line about why you are the right writer, and link to one or two published samples. Send one polite follow-up after about a week — then move on.

  1. Pick sites that fit. Your topic should belong on their blog. Check that they publish guest posts and read their guidelines first.
  2. Find the right person. Look for the editor or content manager on the about page, the contributor guidelines or LinkedIn. A first name beats “Hi there”.
  3. Read a few recent posts. Mention one specifically. It proves you are not sending the same email to 500 sites.
  4. Offer 2–3 specific ideas. Clear, useful titles that the site has not covered yet.
  5. Keep it under 150 words. Editors skim. The generator’s “Short” version is built for this.
  6. Follow up once. After 5–7 days, send one short reminder. No reply after that means “no” for now.

Pitching yourself as a podcast guest

Podcast pitches follow the same rules, with one difference: hosts are looking for a great conversation, not an article. Lead with the topic and the story you can tell, mention an episode you listened to, and make scheduling easy. Being a guest on relevant shows is also one of the best ways to earn editorial podcast backlinks — learn more in what are podcast backlinks.

Common guest post pitching mistakes

  • Mass, copy-paste emails with no personal line.
  • Pitching topics the site already covered — search their blog first.
  • Leading with your link. Editors care about their readers first.
  • Following up three times in a week. One reminder is enough.
  • Ignoring their guidelines on length, format or topics.
  • Asking for keyword anchors. Natural, branded anchors are safer — check yours with the anchor text ratio checker.

Don’t have time to pitch?

Outreach takes time, and many sites only accept paid placements. If you would rather skip the pitching, browse my guest post sites list or see guest posting — articles written and published for you on real, relevant sites. Check what a fair price looks like first with the backlink cost calculator.

Guest post pitch FAQ.

How long should a guest post pitch be?

Under about 150 words. Editors get many pitches, so a short email with a personal opening, 2–3 topic ideas and one line about you works best.

How many topic ideas should I include?

Two or three. One idea gives the editor nothing to choose from; more than three looks unfocused.

When should I follow up on a guest post pitch?

After about 5–7 days, with one short, polite reminder. If there is still no reply, move on and try other sites.

Should I write the article before pitching?

Usually no. Pitch ideas first so the editor can choose the angle that fits their readers, then write the article to their guidelines.

Can I ask for a backlink in my pitch?

Don’t lead with it. Focus on the value for their readers. Most sites that accept guest posts allow an author bio or a natural link to a relevant resource — check their guidelines.

Does this generator use AI?

No. It builds your pitch from proven templates and the details you enter. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
