What is a disavow file?
A disavow file is a plain .txt file you upload to Google Search Console’s Disavow Links tool. Each line is either a full URL or a domain: entry, and it asks Google to ignore those backlinks when assessing your site. Google recommends it only when you have many spammy or artificial links that caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action.
Most websites never need one. Google already ignores most random spam links on its own. The disavow tool is for real problems: a manual action for unnatural links, a large paid-link or link-scheme history, or a negative SEO attack you can clearly see in your backlink data.
Disavow file format (Google’s rules)
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| File type | Plain text file ending in .txt, encoded in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII |
| Size | Up to 2 MB and 100,000 lines (blank lines and comments count) |
| One entry per line | A full URL, or a domain with the domain: prefix |
| Domains | domain:example.com disavows every link from that domain and its subdomains |
| URLs | Up to 2,048 characters each; disavows only that exact page |
| Subfolders | Not supported — domain:example.com/blog/ is invalid |
| Comments | Lines starting with # are ignored by Google |
| Uploading | A new file replaces the previous list for that property |

The generator above builds exactly this structure: a dated header, your comment, a domain section and a URL section, sorted and without duplicates.
How to create and upload a disavow file
Want the full walkthrough, including the Domain-property limitation and whole-TLD disavows? Read the step-by-step guide on how to disavow backlinks.
- Export your backlinks. Use Google Search Console (Links → Top linking sites → Export) or a tool like Ahrefs or Semrush.
- Review them manually. Mark only links that are clearly spammy, paid or part of a scheme. Don’t rely on a “toxic score” alone — it is a third-party guess, not Google’s view.
- Paste the list into the generator. Choose whole domains in most cases — spam sites rarely link from just one page.
- Merge your old file. If you have uploaded a disavow file before, paste it in the merge box. Otherwise your new upload will undo the old one.
- Download disavow.txt and open Google’s Disavow Links tool (search “Google disavow tool” while signed in to Search Console).
- Choose the right property and upload the file. Google can take a few weeks to process it; disavowed links will still appear in the Links report.
When you should — and should not — disavow
| Disavow | Don’t disavow |
|---|---|
| You have a manual action for unnatural links in Search Console | Random spam, scraper and “SEO stats” sites — Google already ignores these |
| You (or an old agency) bought many links or used private blog networks | Links just because a tool gives them a high “toxic” score |
| A clear negative SEO attack: thousands of spam links with exact-match anchors | Low-DR but real, relevant sites — small sites are not bad sites |
| You can’t get the links removed by contacting the site owners | Your own social profiles, big platforms or real press coverage |
Google itself calls disavowing an advanced feature that can harm your site if used incorrectly. Disavowing good links removes value you earned; it never adds rankings on its own.
Common disavow file mistakes
- Uploading a new file without the old entries. The new list replaces the old one completely.
- Disavowing a whole platform.
domain:blogspot.comdisavows every Blogspot site. Use the exact subdomain, likedomain:spam-site.blogspot.com. - Trying to disavow a folder. Google ignores subpaths — use the domain or individual URLs.
- Wrong format. Spaces after
domain:, wildcards like*.example.com, or saving from Word as .docx or .rtf. - Disavowing your own site or major sites like YouTube, Wikipedia or Google — the generator blocks these for you.
- Expecting instant results. Google needs to recrawl the links first; recovery takes weeks to months.
After disavowing: rebuild with clean links
Disavowing only removes bad signals. To recover, you also need new, natural links and a healthy anchor mix. Check your profile with the anchor text ratio checker, then build brand-led links like podcast backlinks and profile backlinks that look natural to Google.

Disavow FAQ.
What is the correct disavow file format?
A plain .txt file in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, up to 2 MB and 100,000 lines. Put one entry per line: a full URL to disavow one page, or domain:example.com to disavow a whole domain. Lines starting with # are comments.
Should I disavow domains or URLs?
Usually domains. Spam sites tend to link from many pages and create new ones over time, so domain: entries are safer and shorter. Use exact URLs only when the rest of the site is legitimate — for example, one spammy forum thread on a real community site.
Does uploading a new disavow file replace the old one?
Yes. A new upload replaces the previous list for that Search Console property. Always merge your old entries into the new file — the generator has a merge box for this.
Do I need to disavow toxic backlinks?
Usually not. “Toxic” scores come from third-party tools, not Google, and Google already ignores most spam links. Disavow when you have a manual action, a history of paid or scheme links, or a clear negative SEO attack.
How long does a disavow take to work?
Google says it can take a few weeks to process the file, and links are only re-evaluated when Google recrawls them. Any recovery usually shows over weeks to months.
Can disavowing links hurt my rankings?
Yes, if you disavow good links. Google calls it an advanced feature that can harm performance when used incorrectly. Only disavow links you are confident are spammy or artificial.
Is this disavow file generator free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser — your links are never uploaded or stored.
